Communities and their People
Punta Gorda, Roatán
This island community located on the northwest side of Roatan, was the first Garifuna settlement in Central America. In 1797 their ancestors departed from San Vicente to Roatan, where many remained and formed the community of Punta Gorda, while many others spread throughout the Central American isthmus. Since then, the community has had a direct dependency with the sea, whose kindness shown over 216 centuries, allowed the Garifuna of Punta Gorda grow and establish itself as a proud fishing community, with women and men evidently committed to participate in the responsible management of their own coastal and marine resources.
