“Reel Fishing Charters” is a community project that aims to link the traditional fishermen on the cays to an alternative livelihood from tourism and is part of UCME's aims to identify alternatives for local fishermen so as to reduce the pressure on local fish populations
Reel Fishing Charters give visitors to Utila the opportunity to catch a piece of history and experience the thrill of fishing in the local traditional fashion in open topped “dories”. Customers have the option of fishing the traditional way with hand lines or using a rod and reel if they are more comfortable with that. Depending on the season and weather, there is a chance to catch tuna, dolphin fish, wahoo, king fish, and deep water snappers. Guests have the option to keep one or two fish but are encouraged to catch and release. Should they choose to keep their catch, there is even the possibility of returning to the Cays to have it cooked in a traditional local style.
UCME are using their central location in Utila to promote the fishing trips and have created a roster of fishermen who will take turns sharing a bit of their culture with the lucky would-be anglers. Not only does this project offer an alternative economic opportunity for the fishermen, it also lessens the pressure on the already stressed fish populations of the area. Every day a fisherman works on a charter means that that fisherman is going to make the same money (if not more) for catching one or two fish as he would with his normal catch of scores of fish.
This project also provides an opportunity to educate the fishing community about the hazards of over fishing, the need for catch regulations and how to have a sustainable self-regulated fisheries management plan. Fostering long lasting relationships with the fishing community illustrates our dedication to our mission and their livelihoods.
